Signs Your Spouse May Be Hiding Assets In Your Divorce

If you are going through a divorce, it’s important that you maintain an awareness of what your spouse is doing throughout the process. If your spouse does something against the law during the process of the divorce, it could negatively impact you. One of the common, illegal actions performed by a spouse during a divorce is a failure to disclose all of the marital assets. Hiding assets can result in many consequences. Below are just a few of the signs that your spouse might be hiding assets in your divorce.

If your spouse has financial information sent to a PO Box or separate address

If your spouse has financial information sent to a separate address than the address you share(d), it might be a sign they are hiding assets from the divorce. If they have statements or tax forms sent to a separate address, you are not fully aware of your marital financial state.

If your spouse has always done the finances and refuses to give over information

If your spouse has always done the finances in our marriage, but now refused to release any information about them, that could be a bad sign. If they are maintaining sole control over all the accounts, they could be trying to hide something. It’s important that you obtain login information and passwords for all financial accounts your name is on.

Mysterious trips abroad

This one may seem a little obvious or far-fetched, but if your spouse is taking spontaneous or mysterious trips abroad, they could be traveling to countries where finance regulations are a more relaxed than in the U.S. Be aware of any trips your spouse is taking to be sure they aren’t up to something illegal with your assets.

An abundance of overdue bills or debt piling up

If you are noticing an abundance of bills or debt piling up when you know you have the income to pay the bills, that means two things: you’re not fully aware of your financial status, and your spouse might be hiding assets. If they are not using the assets to keep your bills current, what are they doing with them?

These are just some of the common signs your spouse may be hiding assets in your divorce. These are not definitive and no legal accusations should be made based on this post alone. Contact Betsy Fischer if you think your spouse might be hiding assets.
